The much anticipated wait is over – Sheffield Park is officially open for all to enjoy!

The City of Coquitlam celebrated the opening of Burke Mountain’s newest and highly anticipated Neighbourhood park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening event on July 26th, 2022. Located at the corner of Sheffield Avenue and Chandler Street, Sheffield Park is the newest addition to Burke Mountain’s already impressive collection of amenities including the recent Riley Park and upcoming Burke Mountain Discovery Centre and Ibex Café + Kitchen.

The innovative design and construction of this two-acre park was directly informed through public consultation and was funded by community growth, through both developer contributions, including the City’s development activity and Development Cost Charges.  The Park’s unique features were designed to appeal to all age groups, promoting a multi-generations space for people to have fun, relax or be active. Whether you want to kickback and take advantage of the scenic views from the designated viewing platform, or work towards your fitness goals using the accessible rubber fitness pathways – this inclusive and state-of-the-art park has it all.

Designed by local architectural firm Space2place, the configuration of the park embraces the sloped landscapes of Burke Mountain with creative playground equipment and a meandering, boomerang-inspired accessible pathway spanning the park from end to end. Emphasizing flexibility, Sheffield Park can accommodate a range of activities, from practicing yoga on the passive open lawn, taking part in a pick-up game of basketball, or keeping cool in the stylish water play area.

Sheffield Park’s layout caters to people of all ages and abilities. For younger children, imaginations can run wild with a creative sand play area, a water spray park, and an exhilarating slide. For older children, there will be climbing structures built into the landscape, disc swings, spinners and a mini skate spot.

For adults, large parts of the park have been reserved for rest and relaxation including expansive raised social seating and assorted lounge chairs strategically placed across the park. Thoughtful washroom integration allows for park guests to enjoy Burke Mountain’s newest amenity for as long as they wish, with complementary WiFi service covering the entire park.

Although it has only been open for a short period of time, people have already been raving about the quality project. “What Coquitlam has done with each of their parks is so creative and fun… Kudos to your planning/design/parks teams!” says one resident. Another comment adds to this, “ [thanks] for the great design, it’s in my neighborhood! Kiddo loves the park!”.
