On January 20, three design teams made up of landscape architects, architects, planners, local citizens, and students assembled at Leigh Elementary School in Northeast Coquitlam to illustrate what the commercial village centre in Northeast Coquitlam might look like. The three concepts were displayed at the Partington Creek Village Neighbourhood Plan Public Open House on March 14, at Leigh Elementary School.
In July, the development took its first significant step forward with changes to the Citywide Official Community Plan, and approvals of policies and guidelines for the development of the Burke Mountain Village site.
The City sought a master plan that would create a bold new mixed-use neighbourhood that was ecologically sustainable, economically viable, community-relevant, and a successful example of how a liveable, vibrant community can be created in a mountainside and environmentally-sensitive setting.
In November, the City engaged local residents to determine the brand identity for the future Partington Creek Neighbourhood Centre. The feedback received was used to create an identity for the Village, instill neighbourhood pride, and position the Village Centre as a great place to live, work, and play. Through this survey, the name “Burke Mountain Village” was chosen.
Road construction and servicing on Burke Mountain was initiated and is ongoing. Projects, including Burke Village Promenade and Rocklin Street, were recently completed.
Complementing the spectacular outdoor playground of Burke Mountain is a civic area incorporating the future Burke Mountain Community Centre. This vital component of Burke Mountain and Burke Mountain Village will include a pool, fitness centre, double gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms and a new branch of the Coquitlam Public Library. Find out more about the new community centre.
Following an extensive Request for Proposals process, PGA Hospitality Inc., who own and operate Beanery Coffeehouse and Eatery in the Westwood Plateau area, was selected by the City as the operator for the café space. Beanery Coffeehouse is a family-run and community-focused business that has been in operation since 2017.
Burke Mountain Discovery Centre and Ibex Café + Kitchen Opens!
There is a new gathering place at the heart of Coquitlam’s northeast with the opening of the much-anticipated Burke Mountain Discovery Centre at 3537 Princeton Ave. This City facility provides a space to come together, socialize and learn about the future Burke Mountain Village, the planned social and commercial hub of the neighbourhood. It will feature more than 120,000 sq. ft. of retail as well as the state-of-the-art community centre, public plaza and neighbourhood park.
Anchoring the Discovery Centre is the Ibex Café + Kitchen — the first café to open in Northeast Coquitlam — featuring an assortment of freshly baked goods, sandwiches, specialty coffee, wine and beer. For more information about the café, visit cafeibex.ca.
